Books for Younger Teens - Buying books

Tips on buying books for younger teens

  1. Decide if a particular category is right for the person for whom you’re buying. Use this category to guide your search. In other words, if the teen likes sports, you will want to find something in sports books for younger teens. If he or she enjoys mystery, begin your search in this area.
  2. Check the Listmania section at Amazon for your specific category of books. So, if your teen hates to read, you’d visit the Books for Teens Who Hate Reading page – yes, there actually is such a section – where you’ll find a wide array of titles that are designed to interest virtually any young reader.
  3. Use teacher resources. There is a wonderful company called, Follett Educational Services, which provides literature about books for younger teens and other ages to English teachers. These guides, many of which are available in downloadable formats at the web site, not only direct teachers, they can be extremely helpful to people who want to know what teens are reading in school. Many of the titles at Follett may not be used at the school attended by the particular person for whom you are buying, but these are wonderful books for younger teens. So, if you learn that a title of interest is not being taught in that school, you may want to purchase this book as additional reading material for the teen in your life.
  4. Ask your potential reader questions about what he or she enjoys reading. This will give you a sense of purpose, when shopping. Now, remember, most teens won’t say specific genres such as, mystery, suspense or romance. You sort of have to “feel them out.” Ask if he or she likes stories about athletes, or detectives, or kids who work themselves out of a difficult problem, or about magicians. This will send you down the proper road to finding the right books for younger teens.
  5. If money is tight, check for bargains. Many people race to the bookstore and buy the first thing that jumps out at them. Most of the books for younger teens are available at discount places. Check the Where to buy section below for guidance.

Caution

Use the Follett site as a guide, but don’t attempt to buy from there, unless you are a teacher. Even if you can purchase a book there, you’ll likely find a better deal elsewhere, as Follett likes to sell in bulk to educators.

Where to Buy Books for Younger Teens

As is the case when purchasing just about anything, when buying books for teens, the first place you may wish to check is Amazon. If, for example, you’ve checked the Follett site, and found something that seems perfect, go to Amazon.com and look for it there. You may find a brand new copy at up to 60 percent off the publisher’s price. If you are not an Amazon.com person, you might want to check your favorite Bookstore.
