A rechargeable battery lets you use a portable GPS in any car or on foot. Most of these type of GPS devices also have portable functions like touch-screens, internal speaker, and internal antenna. Also note that you can power the portable GPS with an adapter that simply plugs into your cigarette lighter.
- In-Dash. If you are sure that you only need a GPS device for one car, then consider an in-dash model. These models have larger screens and often give you the best satellite signal because of powerful antennas. Some in-dash devices are capable of playing DVDs, satellite or HD radio, and playing your mp3 player. You almost always need to have these professionally installed if you want it to look right in your car.

- For fun. Yes, come people use one just to use one. Many of the features are well used and who knows you might find somewhere interesting that you didn't know existed right in your own area!
How To Pick One
With so many brands, how do you choose one? The easiest way is to play around with them. Do you know a friend who has one? Ask to use theirs or travel with them as they use theirs. Another way to choose one is to visit an electronics retailer. Most electronics retailers have GPS units out on display for you to mess with. Don't be afraid, they're out for you to touch.
Which one feels comfortable to you? Did you pick up on one quicker than another? Unless you have a specific brand in mind already, you should find one that will have the features you want. Don't settle for one brand because your friend loves that brand. If a GPS has the features you want, then go for that one.
