Guide to Buying an Air Mattress
From LoveToKnow Buy
Using a guide to buying an air mattress will help you find one that's comfortable for your budget as well as a mattress that lasts long and is tough enough for whatever your needs. A guide to buying an air mattress can help you purchase one with the right knowledge and not on a whim.
Size
First, determine who may be using the air mattress. There are three main sizes, which are similar to bed mattresses. Full-, queen-, and king-size air mattresses are the most common sizes. The one you buy depends on how much room you have—whether you plan on using it in a tent or a room in your house—and who you think will use it the most.
- Full-size air mattresses are good for one person or two small children. Usually about six to six-and-a-half feet in length, they are plenty wide to sleep comfortably.
- Queen-size mattresses are typically good for one person or two older children, though two adults can sleep on it, it may not be comfortable.
- King-size air mattresses can obviously fit two people well. If you have a large room or tent to place this size in, then a king-sized mattress is the way to go.
Tip: Measure the area where the air mattress will go. Do not measure wall-to-wall since the mattress will not take up the entire room. Measure the open space that you have. The same goes when figuring the dimensions of a tent. Use available space and be sure not to include space taken up by equipment and other items.
Style
To make the transition from your own bed to an air mattress, it helps to know what three types of air mattresses are available:
- For a firm mattress, look for a tight, stitched pattern. The layer of foam is packed in the vinyl, which gives you that firm feel.
- Extra soft air mattresses are available. The foam is attached directly to the mattress so that more foam can be added. Also, this type of mattress fits around you body for the best fit and feel. There is usually about two to three times the amount of foam in this soft mattress than there is in a firm mattress.
- If you are looking for something in between, then look for a mattress that contains quite a bit of foam (though not as much as an extra soft mattress), but it stitched separately to the vinyl.
Inflation
Purchasing an air mattress usually means buying an air pump to go along with it. If you think that you might be buying additional air mattresses in the future, then get an electric pump, which uses electricity for its motor to insert air into the mattress. This is especially useful if you pump up an air mattress on a regular basis. A hand or foot pump is less expensive, but takes longer to inflate the mattress.
Some air mattresses come with a pump built into the mattress. These kind of air mattresses are more expensive because of the extra parts, but are very convenient by saving space.
Guide to Buying an Air Mattress: Pricing
If you time your shopping just right, you can find some great deals on air mattresses. This guide to buying an air mattress lists a few of the best times to get an inflatable bed.
- You can find a lot of initial sales at the beginning of the summer, when camping season starts. Mattresses, pumps and other accessories go on sale to catch those first shoppers.
- Other sales occur near the Holidays when families need air mattresses for their family members to sleep on. The one downside to this time is that selection may be limited.
- Right after the summer camping season, most of the extra camping equipment that stores have brought in need to be marked down and sold to make room for the upcoming holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
