How to Buy Boys Clothes

From LoveToKnow Buy

It is quite possible that boys actually cost more money to raise than girls. After all, active boys go through clothes fast, either growing out of them or ruining them as they explore the world. These steps will help you shop wisely for boys’ clothes that fit, look good and last—

How to Buy Boys' Clothes

Purchasing boys clothes

  1. First, take stock of the kind of boys’ clothes your child needs for a normal day. If your boy is in preschool, kindergarten or elementary school, then he might be in need of a wardrobe that includes clothes that can be worn all day. Much children’s clothing is designed to make them look like little adults, so you can purchase jeans or khakis and t-shirts or oxfords for your boy. The point is to think about buying the style of clothing he is comfortable wearing and that you are comfortable buying.
  2. Certainly you don’t want him to wear the same outfit everyday, but you also don’t want to spend money on too many outfits. That’s why it is best to purchase a pants and shirts that can be matched with one another. A sound wardrobe of boys’ clothes for a child that attends some sort of school every day of the week would include five pairs of pants and 10 shirts. The pants should be in basic colors and each pair of pants should be able to go with at least four of the shirts. This will allow your child to wear a different outfit each day of the week for two weeks, and it will lengthen periods between washings.
  3. Don’t forget underwear. Take an inventory of your boy’s socks, underwear and undershirts before you go shopping. You’ll want to discard anything that is worn or has holes in it. Going through his clothes first will help you know what to buy when you are shopping.
  4. When you start shopping, it is not a bad idea to have another parent with you, or at least another parent’s advice. Other parents of boys will likely know of retailers you have never tried and may have advice on specific brands of boys’ clothes. They may also know where to find discounted boys’ clothes, which never hurts.
  5. Finally, it is best to have your boy with you when shopping. You can have him try on clothes, and you can make sure you buy boys’ clothes that he will wear. Also, he may remind you of other clothes he needs that you forgot to include on your list or he may simply see something he likes that you also find attractive. The more shopping you can complete at once, the more time you will have to spend doing something fun with your child.

Caution

Read the labels on boys’ clothes before you buy. You will be washing these clothes often, so make sure you are buying boys’ clothes that will not shrink and that hold their color when washed.
