Read on for more makeup tips!

How to buy foundation

Foundation Tips

  1. Start off by going to a department store cosmetics section, or to a store devoted entirely to cosmetics (Sephora, MAC, etc). Seek out the assistance of one of the salespeople, and ask for their help in choosing the foundation that’s best for you. Talk to her about any skin allergies or conditions you might have, and be sure to let them know what your skin type is (oily, normal, dry, combination). With this information, the salesperson will be able to get a good idea of products that will work for you.
  2. If you don’t seek the help of a cosmetics professional and go it alone with buying foundation, look for foundation that’s oil-free (for oily complexions), or a foundation that moisturizes deeply (for dry complexions). Try to bring a friend or family member along with you for honest opinions about what does and doesn’t look good on your face.
  3. Gently apply a few shades of different foundations to your skin, preferably at your jaw line. After applying, go to a spot where there is not only a mirror, but natural light as well. The foundation you’ll want to buy is the one that disappears into your skin.
  4. If you are going the drugstore route, take the foundations you’re considering purchasing and go to a spot in the store where there’s natural light coming in. Using a mirror (you can simply use one for sale in the store and then put it back when finished), hold the different bottles of foundation up to your neck to see which one best matches your skin.
  5. Consider buying two different foundations when you go shopping—a lighter one for winter months, and a darker one for summer months.

Caution

You will not be able to get a good idea of whether a specific foundation is right for you by testing it on your wrist—this is an outdated practice for selecting foundation! Always test foundation on your jaw line…

Comments

Since there are so many foundations, skin types, undertones, etc, your best bet would be to go to a cosmetics counter (in Sephora, a department store, or a freestanding store) and chat with the makeup artists there. They will not only be able to point you in the right direction when it comes to the product you need, but you can also get a color match on the spot.
