Flowery perfumes tend to be sweeter and a bit stronger, while earth-based are simple fragrances that take their base scents from minerals and plants other than flowers, like vanilla or cinnamon. For the full-on sexy effect, however, try a musk. Musk is general a scent taken directly from animals or is an artificial fragrance designed to smell like animal musk.
  3. Once you've decided whether you want a light, heavy or in-between scent, it's time to put your nostrils to work. First, open the bottle you are interested in and sniff. Then, dab a very little amount on your wrist. Sniff the perfume, then let it sit for several minutes and sniff it again.
  4. Perfumes usually have a few layers of scent. That's why you sniff a perfume immediately after you apply it, and then a few moments later, after the first layers of scent have largely evaporated. What's left are the base oils of the perfume, and these contain the fragrances that will cling to your skin the longest.
  5. After you have sniffed the perfume on your wrist a second time, ask yourself if there is still a pleasing aroma. Is this a fragrance you can imagine wearing at work or when you are out on a date? Or that you can imagine the person for whom you are purchasing the perfume wearing?

Caution

Never walk into a store and quickly buy perfume without testing it, unless you've tried that scent before. You never know what a perfume will smell like until you've applied some to your skin.
