How to Buy Used DVDs

From LoveToKnow Buy

What many movie lovers don’t know is that you can easily build a DVD library at home without spending tons of money. Below are some things to know when venturing out to shop.

How to Buy Used DVDs

Tips on buying used DVDs

  1. Big chain stores like Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart do not sell used DVDs. Turn to “Records” in your local yellow pages, and check listings for independently owned record shops in your area. Most independent record stores sell used CDs and DVDs, but you should still call the store to make sure. Many indie stores also offer you the opportunity to sell DVDs you own that you don’t want anymore. Also know that most video and DVD rental stores sell used DVDs, where they’re commonly known as "previously viewed" DVDs.
  2. Set a shopping budget for yourself. Do keep in mind that you’re not going to find every movie you want to buy in a used DVD selection! Also know that there are many stores online where you can purchase used DVDs. Simply type in “used DVDs” into the a search engine to find some places that sell used DVDs online.
  3. Used DVDs can in general run anywhere from $5 to $20 in price. Many times used rare, foreign and special edition DVDs will cost even more than $20! If you find a used special edition of a DVD you want, check out its features (bonus material, etc). If it contains features you could live without, check out the DVD at its new, non-special edition price. You just might get a better deal.
  4. Get a good handle on the store’s used DVD return policies. Most stores will have a seven-day return policy or something along those lines. If you don’t examine the DVD for scratches or nicks in the store before making the purchase (this is highly recommended), then be sure you pop it into your DVD player once you get home. Watch the DVD from beginning to end to make sure it functions properly.
  5. Do not discard or lose your DVD purchase receipt. You will need this if you have to return your DVD.

Caution

If you decide to shop online for used DVDs, make sure you are making your purchase from a source you can trust! Amazon.com allows the general public to sell used DVDs through their site, and most sellers will offer a "safe buying guarantee."

For example, Inspector Morse Complete Set (33 dvds) is £53.42 at while the normal price is £67.97.
