How to Buy Yoga Lessons

Tips for buying yoga lessons

  1. Pull out your local yellow pages and look up the word “yoga.” You should find listings for yoga studios—jot down the names, addresses and phone numbers of the ones closest to your home. Place calls to each and ask about beginners’ yoga lessons.
  2. Inquire about how much a set of yoga lessons costs, as well as when the lessons will be held. If you can afford private lessons, go with them—obviously, you’ll get closer, more focused attention from an instructor when enrolled in private yoga lessons. This isn’t to say that group lessons won’t be beneficial—they will be!
  3. Ask the person you speak to at the yoga studio you’re interested in booking lessons at about what you need to bring to class. Many yoga studios will provide yoga mats and bricks for you to work on, many will not.
  4. Before committing to the lessons, be sure your schedule allows for you to take the time needed to learn yoga. For instance, if your yoga lesson begins at 8am on a Saturday morning and you’re someone who likes to sleep in on the weekends, find a studio that has lessons at a different time.
  5. When you meet your yoga instructor for the first time, be sure to tell him/her about any injuries or bodily soft spots you might have. If you’re instructed to go into a pose you don’t feel comfortable in, come out of it! You don’t want to risk hurting yourself. Yoga instructors will of course understand this.
  6. Know that there are many different forms of yoga. After you’ve taken lessons in the basics, talk to your instructor about your exercise goals, and which form of yoga might help you reach your goals quickly and successfully. For instance, if your primary concern is lengthening and stretching your body out of the tightness and soreness it’s trapped in, talk to your instructor about Iyengar yoga.

Caution

Do not attempt to enroll in an intermediate or excelled set of yoga lessons if you are a beginner! You risk serious injury should you attempt this. It’s very important that you begin yoga SLOWLY.
