How to Buy a Hot Tub

From LoveToKnow Buy

If you don’t know how to buy a hot tub, then this article will point you in the right direction. It just doesn’t come down to going to a hot tub dealer and selecting the one that’s the cheapest. You have different options when it comes to hot tubs and knowing what to look for will help you pick the best one for your wants or needs.

A hot tub

Location

Where is your hot tub going? You need to place the hot tub on a flat and sturdy surface. That spot in the grass won’t do, since you will probably need to lay a cement foundation just to place it there. Finding that perfect location can also be determined if you want shade or close access to changing areas or if you want it near patio furniture.

Materials

If you want to keep your hot tub for a long time, then consider the materials from which the hot tub is constructed. A good hot tub liner is made from acrylic or fiberglass. Acrylic is made from one entire mold so there are no cracks or possibilities of leads within the liner. The acrylic liner is also more scratch resistant than fiberglass and works well with the outer wall of the hot tub. Of course, a combination of acrylic and mahogany materials will drive up the price of the hot tub.

How to Buy a Hot Tub with Good Seating

Whatever size hot tub you desire, seating is important. No matter if you look at a two-seater, three-seater or a larger, full-bodied hot tub, being able to move around comfortably will determine if you enjoy or hate the hot tub. Consider these thoughts:

  • When you sit down in the hot tub, can you stretch out easily? What good is a hot tub, if you’re all scrunched up, fighting for space with others?
  • Where does the water line end? Having water that rises near your face or even above it isn’t fun. You need a nice amount of clearance so the hot water isn’t splashing in your eyes.
  • Look at the walls of the liner. Where you sit, are the backs more vertical or slanted? Slanted seating means better comfort while more vertical backs will have you floating periodically.

Jets

Hot tubs can have a different number of jets. The more you have the higher the cost of the hot tub. There are two types of jets to consider. The first is the ones that simply blow air. This circulates the warm water around, but doesn’t do much for massaging you. The other type are the jets that actually push out water. These hit the body for a good massage. It is said that a combination of jets in a hot tub is the way to go. This because the water jets massage while the air jets keep you loosened.

Another consideration for the jets is their positioning. Can you adjust them as needed? If they get irritating, can you aim them down or up or away from you?

Heaters

After you purchase a hot tub, energy will be places in heating the water. If you can find a good cover to keep the heat in (since heat rises), then you will spend less time heating the water and more time in the water. Try to find a hot tub that has all the electric equipment in one area. This includes the heater, the pumps and spa controls. The less electricity has to travel, the more efficient your hot tub will be.

Pumps and Filters

The number of pumps is usually determined by the number of jets you have on the hot tub. The more jets, the more pumps you have. Usually, a hot tub has no more than four pumps. In these pumps are filters that need to be replaced about every 14-18 months.

Sanitization

Just like a pool or an aquarium, when you learn how to buy a hot tub, you’ll need to keep the water clean. This is done with chemicals like chlorine and tablets that kill bacteria and keep the water fresh.
