How to Buy a Portfolio

From LoveToKnow Buy

For anyone who produces commercial or fine art, a portfolio is one of the most important elements of their professional life. Portfolios allow you to carry, store and display your artworks in a refined manner. Read on to discover what makes one portfolio better than the other.

How to Buy a Portfolio

Tips for buying a portfolio

  1. Select the right dimensions for your portfolio, depending upon the nature and size of your artwork. A writer would normally require a portfolio that can accommodate the standard A4 sized pages, a photographer may require a portfolio which can accommodate small to large images that may even be as large as posters and an architect may require a portfolio that can carry huge drawings. For choosing the right sized portfolio, select the largest work of art that you want to display. Measure the height and the width of this work. Then add 4-5 inches to both measurements. This will give you the minimum size of your portfolio case.
  2. Pay attention to the manner in which the artwork is to be mounted in the portfolio. Most portfolios these days have clear plastic folders that are filed together in a ring binder. Clear plastic allows the artwork to be visible, though protected by the plastic film. Specialized portfolios can come with non-glare and non-reflective folders so that the artwork can be viewed properly. The ring binder format is also very useful and convenient as you can easily add and remove sheets from the portfolio.
  3. Portfolios can be of the open book type or look like a large zippered carry bag. The open type of portfolio is good for smaller artworks like photographs and articles. Though, being open by construction, there is a greater possibility of wear and tear through accidents and mishandling. Closed and zippered portfolios fully protect the artwork within. Zippered portfolios look somewhat like a briefcase and have a handle for carrying.
  4. Portfolios can be made from vinyl, leather, cloth, wood (box type) and other materials. Portfolios made from vinyl and other synthetics will be the cheapest. Leather portfolios usually cost the most, though they also offer the longest lifespan of usage. Cloth and wood-box type of portfolios are not so common and also not very practical!
  5. Go for the best portfolio that you can afford. Remember, it is not only your artwork that will be judged, but also the manner in which you store, carry and display it. A shabby portfolio can undermine your worth and make you seem unprofessional.

Caution

Do not assume that one single portfolio will work for all and every artwork, unless your artwork is very, very standardized. Normally people require at least two portfolios: one for the smaller items and one for the larger pieces.
