How to Buy a Vintage Car

From LoveToKnow Buy

Are you sick of the way all new cars these days seem to look pretty much the same? Looking for something that will set you apart from the pack while on the road? Purchasing a vintage car just may be your ticket. They're a terrific investment, they turn heads, and on a purely aesthetic level, they're automotive history in the flesh. Vintage cars can be tricky to purchase, though - there are many things you should be aware of, and if you buy one that's a lemon, you're going to be sinking tons of money into it for repairs. Check out the advice below for steps to take when thinking about buying a vintage car.

How to Buy a Vintage Car

Steps for buying vintage cars

  1. The first thing you'll want to do is consult all the auto and vintage car magazines on the market for advice on how to go about buying a vintage car. What you'll come across with most articles and talks with car professionals is that you should be prepared to buy the parts for your vintage car one by one. It is very hard to find the vintage car of your dreams in one perfect piece. If you don't have a lot of patience, get some! You're going to be hitting salvage yards, Internet ads, garage sales, and more to find what you want.
  2. Set a budget for how much money you're realistically going to be able to spend on your vintage car. You don't want to get going with purchasing parts and then run out of money before you even get the automobile up and running! If that happens then you're going to be stuck playing salesman and will have to write sales advertisements for the parts you just bought and handle interested potential customers. A good way to avoid hitting this pitfall is talk to other vintage car owners about what you can expect as far as expenses and work go. A good place online to go to for advice is The Car Forum.
  3. Whatever it is you come across that you need, be sure to see it in person! That means if you find the hood you need and it's in Washington State, be sure to get the owner of said hood to send you detailed, up-close, color pictures. You could also contact Automobile Inspections, LLC and have a professional go and inspect the part or parts for you.
  4. Know how you're going to be using your vintage car. For instance, will you own it simply for display, or do you plan on taking it out a lot for long drives? Many vintage cars aren't necessarily recommended for everyday use-if you are going to be using your vintage car everyday, make sure it's made up of dependable internal parts, ones that are easy to replace.

Caution

Be aware that you should set up a piggy bank, maybe even a separate bank account or something similar, for money that will go towards unexpected costs for your vintage car.
