How to Buy an HDTV
From LoveToKnow Buy
HDTV, or high definition television, is the frontier of quality television signals and reception. After years of news about the technology, it is now available in more and more communities. These tips can help you find an HDTV that works for you—
Tips on buying a HDTV
- The first task is to determine if an HDTV signal is available in your area, either by satellite or cable. You must be able to receive a signal in order for an HDTV to provide the clear, detailed pictures for which the technology is known. Call your local cable provider or go online to find out if HDTV signals are available, and if not, when they will become available to you. In larger cities, not only can you receive national network and cable shows in HDTV format, but also locally produced shows, such as news.
- If HDTV signals and channels are available, you can now begin to consider purchasing a television that is HDTV compatible. An HDTV is able to receive and display the digital signals sent out via HDTV technology. A good step in this direction would be to talk to friends and coworkers who already have HDTVs. Ask them what they like and dislike about their particular brand and model. Also ask if you can actually view shows on a friend’s HDTV.
- Now, decide how much you want to spend. HDTVs are not cheap, so prepare to make an entertainment investment. According to predictions, eventually all televisions will be able to receive HDTV signals. For now, however, you will find your choice limited to the more expensive TVs, including flat-panel sets and widescreen models.
- The least expensive option is to buy an HDTV signal converter. This is a box that is attached to your television, much like a DVD player. A converter can give you HDTV pictures, but the quality will not be as high as the pictures received and displayed on a television that comes with the HDTV technology built into it. Before you buy an HDTV converter, make sure the television you currently own has the necessary outlets for connecting to the converter.
- You choices in actual HDTVs is wide, though finding one with less than a 20-inch screen is not always simple. Most HDTVs have larger screens. Many also come with surround-sound speakers, as TV manufacturers assume you will want enhanced audio as well as advanced picture display. You will find several flat-panel options, HDTV projection systems and large wide-screen models when you shop.
Caution
Know what to expect from an HDTV before you buy. There has been much promotion of HDTV technology and much discussion about its benefits. Expectations among consumers are very high for this technology; be sure to view a TV that receives HDTV signals so that you know what you will be seeing when you finally turn your new HDTV on.
