1. LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These types of displays have been used for years for smaller screens on electronics such as microwave ovens and calculators. Only in recent years has LCD technology advanced far enough for it to be used in color computer monitors and TV screens. LCD TVs have pliable screens, which give a little when you touch them (which you should not do often).
2. When considering an LCD TV, you should first think about where you want to put it. The great thing about LCD TVs, unlike plasma TVs, is that they come in medium and small sizes (all plasma TVs are large). So, you can easily fit an LCD TV on a mantle, a shelf or even a kitchen counter. LCD TVs are flat and relatively light, depending on the size, so they can be mounted to walls, hung from the ceiling or placed on small stands.
3. Besides space, your budget will be another consideration. Since LCD TV technology has become fairly common, you will find a range of pricing options. The main feature determined by your budget will be the size of LCD TV that you can afford. Sizes range from under 10 inches to 50 inches. Realize, however, that LCD TVs suitable in size for home theater viewing are rarely priced under $600.
4. Be sure to check whether the LCD TV that you are considering includes HDTV compatibility. As high definition television becomes more available, HDTV compatibility is becoming standard with LCD TVs. You may subscribe to a cable system that provides HDTV, in which case you will want a television that can display it.
5. If you plan on creating a home theater environment, you will likely want a bigger LCD TV. A wider and taller screen will provide more of a theater experience. Be sure, however, that the LCD TV you consider will connect to a DVD player and surround sound stereo speakers. These are crucial elements to a home theater environment.

Caution

Obtain installation instructions for your LCD TV before you attempt to mount it to the ceiling or the walls. Instructions should come with the unit, but if they do not, find instructions that take you through the process step by step. LCD TV must be attached firmly to the wall to keep from falling off.
