Types Of Campgrounds

There are two basic types of campgrounds. The first type is publicly owned and usually operated by a government agency. These include campsites within state and national parks. Public campgrounds are often listed on the Internet, with descriptions of available campgrounds, rental instructions. and toll-free numbers for making reservations and asking questions.

Private campgrounds are owned and operated by individuals or businesses. Many are listed on the Internet and most provide toll-free contact numbers. Private campground Web sites offer descriptions of campsites available for rent and often feature full-color photographs. Some will mail brochures upon request.

Searching For Campsites

Searching using a search engine is one way. Camping resource sites are another. Start by looking at what is listed on the camping resource sites, like the National Park Service website. This site lists more than 100 campgrounds located throughout the country. Each listing contains information about the fees, location, rules and instruction on how to rent.

Another good resource for renting a campsite is Kampgrounds of America (KOA). This site features literally thousands of campgrounds located throughout North America. You can search campgrounds by state and find details on everything from prices and availability to amenities and rules using this resource. Most listings include color photographs and phone numbers for making reservations. Many allow you to rent a campsite online as well.

Rental Campsite Pricing

Prices for renting a campsite vary, starting about $10 to $25 per night. The lower-priced campsites are typically barebones and require pitching a tent. The next price level is for RV camping. Renting a cabin is usually the most costly, but is often considerably less than that of staying in a hotel.

Consider Preferences When Renting

The type of campsite you choose to rent, as well as the amenities you desire, is simply a matter of preference. If you want access to the comforts of home, select a campsite that provides what you seek. However, if you think such amenities take away from the spirit of roughing it, seek out a campground that provides less luxury and more wilderness. Selecting the right camping accommodations can mean the difference between a trip that evokes pleasant memories and one that gives you hives each time you remember it.

Barebones approach: Little is provided for you; you simply arrive at your campsite, pitch your tent, and light your campfire. Amenities such as public toilets and showers are often provided. Some campgrounds offer a variety of sports-related activities, pool access, a recreation room and a convenience store.

Rent a cabin: You can find everything from rustic cabins, that contain little more than beds, to luxury units, complete with appliances, electricity, and bathrooms. Some even have hot tubs!

Recreational vehicle (RV) camping: Park your own or rented RV in your rented campsite space and take advantage of all that the campsite has to offer. When done camping, just clean your campsite and drive off.

Making Your Reservation

Each campground has different rules for renting. Some require a deposit, while others allow you to pay when you arrive. Be sure to reserve your campsite early if you plan to camp during the summer, since many campgrounds are fully booked during the peak season.

If you're bringing children, you might want a family-friendly area near a playground or other activity. If your idea of fun is staying up late by the campfire, you might want to ask to be in a more remote area so you don't disturb the early risers.
