This is completely NOT true. While an autograph may make a cheap card a little bit more valuable, if it's an expensive card to begin with, an autograph will add nothing, and in most cases can even DECREASE the value. And this is even if you get it certified. If it's NOT certified, the value is coming way down, because who's to say it's a real suto?
On the other hand, an autograph in an insert set can be VERY valuable, because of their rarity. Big player's autos in these insert sets regularly break $1000 - that's MUCH more than a regular card would ever bring in.
