I just bought a desk for $100 which has the same hide away typewriter as described above, made by Standard Furniture Co. and I found a serial number on the bottom of the desk, maybe that might help someone figure out more about it? If anyone knows anything about the value of these desks I would love to know, because I am considering refinishing it.

Finding out exactly what you have can especially be tricky when you know nothing about a desk's history. It will take a lot of dedication and research, matching styles and special markings to the lists and literature out there about antiques. One place to start looking is eBay's Furniture Buying Guide, which has not only tips on finding the right antique for your home, but also tips like these:

  • Cracks, warps, or fading wood
  • Varied board width
  • Even though there are different eras that your desks could be from, the biggest deciding factors in how much they're worth are their condition and rarity.

It's best to consult an expert who can come out and inspect the desk you have. You can also look into trade publications about antiques. For starters, you may want to check with Antique Week or Antique Trader.

Hope that helps! Good luck identifying your desks!

I have been trying to find the style and year of my antique children's desk. It is wood and has a flip top with three drawers on the left and a cabinet on the right with a tiny drawer. I would like to sell this piece of furniture. Is there any advice you can give me about the pricing?

Hello, I have an old Standard Furniture Desk made from the factory in Herkimer New York. Is there any way to identify the year it was made and possibly a current value?
